#Symbols

Verbal Communication as an agreed-upon and rule-governed system of #symbols used to share meaning. The symbols have rules, involving the sounds, meaning, arrangement, and use of symbols. Specifically, #semantic rules define the meaning of symbols and words, either #connotatively or #denotatively. Denotative meaning is the actual, dictionary definition while connotative meanings is the meanings we assign based on our experiences and beliefs.


 


The symbols above have denotative and connotative meanings. Social media networks use many symbols for their subscribers to be able to communicate with their followers such as icons and emojis. Subscribers use emojis, which are pictures or icons that contain meaning. They are used together with words to add emotion or ideas to messages. Emojis can have a connotative or denotative meaning, depending on the situation. Instagram uses a magnifying glass, which has a connotative meaning of being able to search something. Additionally, a heart's connotative meaning is a like on someone's post. On Twitter or Facebook, the denotative meaning for a thumbs up, is a like. Even icons themselves are symbols with connotative and denotative meanings. The denotation of the Snapchat icon is a ghost. the connotation of a blue bird icon, is the social media platform, Twitter. Symbols have connotative and denotative meanings. Many symbols, icons, and emojis are used in order to communicate on social media networks.
