A Dark Day

Intercultural communication

“Culture" refers to a group or community which shares common experiences that shape the way its members understand the world. It includes groups that we are born into, such as race, national origin, gender, class, or religion. It can also include a group we join or become part of. As a result of the tragic day in Pittsburg on October 27, 2018, my community came together to organize a trip to Pittsburg to support and comfort the Jewish community there.

October 27, 2018 was a tragic day for the Jewish community. There was a mass shooting at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Pittsburg, Pennslyvania. This crime was an antisemitic attack, which killed 11, and injured 7 people.

The rabbi of my synagogue in Brooklyn, New York, gathered a group of people; principals, students, and Jewish community members, to visit the people of Pittsburg. The rabbi started by thanking the police department for their service and showed their appreciation for saving and protecting many lives. The Police officers that were injured during the shootings shared their stories with the community members. Then, they payed respects to the mourners (the victims family) of the Pittsburg Jewish community to comfort the mourners and listened to their stories. It was time for prayer, so they joined the PIttsburg family in prayer. Then, the group visited the Tree of Life congregation synagogue where there were Jewish Stars with the names of the 11 victims and flowers and rocks placed on the stars. Lastly, the group stopped at a community members’ family’s house where they hugged each of them, thanking them for coming to comfort them in their time of need.

The group told the family: we are one nation, one people and one family.
