Human Connections

People express themselves in many different ways, even when gesturing ASL. sometimes people emphasize certain movements due to the emotions they feel associated with them. there is something about human connection that allows us to learn who people are. Deaf people use sign language and expressions in order to make human connections and interact with people. Christine Sun Kim, who is deaf, talks about sound in her TedTalk. she says that sound is a part of her life and that she understands sounds by watching people behave to sound, like sound etiquette. In dead culture, movement is equivalent to sound. At The Color Factory, I experienced human connections, together with sound.

The Color Factory

I visited The Color Factory , which is a multi-sensory art exhibit experience. The Color Factory was created with colors that were chosen from all around New York City, to create an interactive experience with art. There were many rooms, but one of them had colorful booths that were set up so that you sit across from a stranger and you participate in an exercise together. You received a sheet to fill out while listening to a recording with instructions. The instructions said to take a look at the person in front of you, look at their features, and shade in the colors of their mouth, skin, and eyes. Next they asked to choose the colors of what you think their favorite food may be. Then, they asked you to draw the person in front of you with a continuous line while looking at the person in front of you, and not at the stranger. At the end, you share a note with your partner and swap the sheet to see what your partner filled out for you. It was a very interesting experience, to have human interaction with a complete stranger and have to look at them in order to draw a picture. Another room was filled with round tables with instruments that played music. Everyone in the room picked up a stick and banged the instrument, which created music. Lastly, there was a room with an illuminated dance floor, mirrors, and lights. you were given a color that was assigned to you, and the card that you received associated with that color, told you to perform a secret dance move. there was music on, and the whole group was dancing, and we were all connected with one another through music. Human connection is a vital part of our lives and I was able to experience that at this exhibit, The Color Factory.
